Meet Your Host

Lisa McKelvey - Host of The Long Road Podcast

Lisa McKelvey

G'day, I'm Lisa McKelvey—wife to Steve and mum to five kids from Goondiwindi, QLD.

Our Story

On December 26, 2021, our second eldest child, Beau, had a motorbike accident that devastatingly left him with a complete T7/T8 spinal cord injury, making him a paraplegic at just 12 years old. His life changed forever, and our family's world was turned upside down. Beau's recovery and adjustment to life in a wheelchair brought challenges we had never imagined.

During his 10-week stay at Queensland Children's Hospital, we had countless conversations about how to rebuild our lives. We were starting from scratch, doing everything we could to reshape our family's routine and keep our family unit strong. It certainly wasn't an easy time. While the hospital provided essential medical care and guidance, we craved something more—the wisdom and lived experience of Australian families who had walked this road before us.

Through hospital connections, accessible sports, and therapy communities, we met incredible families facing adversity with strength and resilience. Their stories inspired us and gave us hope. But I also realized how difficult it was to find these voices when we needed them most.

That's why I created The Long Road Podcast—a resource that anyone can access, whether they're sitting in the Ronald McDonald House searching for answers, spending long hours driving to appointments, or simply looking for lived-experience advice from people who truly understand.

Whether you're a parent, a friend, or someone who simply wants to better understand what others are going through, my hope is that this podcast provides comfort, connection, and practical insights into the realities that some families live with every day.
